Vimshottari Dasha: The 120-Year Planetary Timeline
If the birth chart is the map, the Dasha is the clock. Vimshottari Dasha is the great 120-year cycle that tells us which planet is quietly running your life right now — and what it has come to teach.
Two people can share almost the same birth chart and yet live very different years — because the planets take turns to rule our lives, one after another, in a fixed order. This is the secret of Vedic timing, and its most trusted tool is the Vimshottari Dasha: a 120-year cycle in which each of the nine planets governs a set span of years, colouring that whole chapter with its nature.
The word vimshottari means 120. When astrologers say 'you are running Saturn Mahadasha' or 'Jupiter's period begins next year', this is the system they mean. Understanding it turns a static chart into a living story — and explains why the same planet can bless one decade and test another.
What is a Dasha?
A Dasha is a planetary period — a stretch of time ruled by one planet, during which its themes come to the foreground of life. The Vimshottari system divides a notional 120-year lifespan among the nine planets, each receiving a fixed number of years. The planet whose Mahadasha (major period) is running acts like the season of your life: a Venus period may bring love, beauty and comfort; a Saturn period, hard work, discipline and lasting rewards.
The Mahadasha order and years
The nine periods always run in the same sequence, and each has its own length. Together they add up to exactly 120 years:
| Order | Planet | Years |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 |
| 2 | Venus (Shukra) | 20 |
| 3 | Sun (Surya) | 6 |
| 4 | Moon (Chandra) | 10 |
| 5 | Mars (Mangal) | 7 |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 |
| 7 | Jupiter (Guru) | 16 |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | 19 |
| 9 | Mercury (Budh) | 17 |
The cycle does not start from Ketu for everyone — it begins at the planet ruling the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth, and then follows this order. So one person may be born into the middle of a Rahu Mahadasha, another at the start of Jupiter's.
Antardasha: the periods within periods
Each Mahadasha is divided again into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), one for every planet, in the same order and in proportion to their years. This is what gives Vedic timing its precision. You might be in Saturn Mahadasha, Jupiter Antardasha — the broad discipline of Saturn softened by a spell of Jupiter's grace. Astrologers go even finer, into Pratyantar (sub-sub) periods, to time events to the month.
How your Dasha is calculated
Your dasha sequence depends entirely on the exact position of the Moon at your birth — specifically the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) and how far the Moon had travelled through it. That fixes which planet's period you were born into and how much of it remained. This is why an accurate birth time is essential: even a few minutes can shift the balance of your first period.
A personal dasha timeline — which period you are in now, when the next one begins, and what it means for you — is calculated from your exact birth details. It is one of the most valuable parts of a full reading, and the honest way to time decisions.
What each planet's period tends to bring
Broadly — and always shaped by that planet's strength in your chart:
- Sun — recognition, authority, matters of the father and self.
- Moon — emotions, home, mother, public life and travel.
- Mars — energy, courage, property, drive and occasional conflict.
- Mercury — study, business, communication and clever gains.
- Jupiter — wisdom, growth, children, marriage and good fortune.
- Venus — love, marriage, comfort, art and the good things of life.
- Saturn — hard work, discipline, delay then durable reward.
- Rahu — ambition, sudden rises, the foreign and the unconventional.
- Ketu — detachment, spirituality, research and letting go.
Whether a period blesses or tests you depends on where that planet sits in your chart — which is exactly what a reading reveals.
