Vastu Tips for Home: A Room-by-Room Guide

Small, practical adjustments to the directions of your home can quietly improve health, harmony and prosperity.

Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of aligning a building with the natural forces and directions that move through it. The idea is simple: when the placement of rooms and activities harmonises with the five elements and the cardinal directions, a home supports the life lived in it; when it fights them, it quietly drains it.

You do not need to rebuild your house to benefit. Here are practical, mostly non-structural tips, room by room. For a full assessment of your home, a personal consultation with Dr. Nidhi can read your actual floor plan in detail.

Entrance and main door

The main entrance is where energy enters the home. The north, east and north-east are considered the most auspicious directions for a main door. Keep the entrance well-lit, clean and clutter-free, ensure the door opens fully and doesn't creak, and avoid shoe racks, dustbins or broken items right at the threshold.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the domain of Agni, the fire element, and is best placed in the south-east corner of the home. Ideally, cook facing east. Keep the gas stove and the water source (sink) apart rather than adjacent, since fire and water are opposing elements. A clean, well-ventilated kitchen is itself good Vastu.

Bedroom

The master bedroom is best in the south-west, the direction of stability and rest. Sleep with your head to the south or east for deeper rest — never with the head to the north. Avoid mirrors facing the bed, and keep electronics and clutter to a minimum for calmer sleep.

Pooja room and place of worship

The north-east (Ishaan corner) is the most sacred zone of the home and ideal for the pooja room or altar. Face east or north while praying, keep the space clean and uncluttered, and avoid placing the pooja area in a bedroom, bathroom or under a staircase.

Wealth, and simple everyday corrections

The north (ruled by Kubera) and the south-east are associated with wealth; keep your safe or cash box here, ideally opening towards the north. Beyond that, a few simple habits help any home: fix leaking taps promptly (they signify draining wealth), let in natural light and air, keep the centre of the home (the Brahmasthan) open and clutter-free, and repair anything broken. Vastu rewards a home that is cared for.

Frequently asked questions

North, east and north-east are considered the most auspicious directions for a main entrance. Whatever the direction, keeping the entrance clean, well-lit and clutter-free is itself an important Vastu principle.
Sleeping with your head towards the south or east is recommended for deep, restful sleep. Sleeping with the head towards the north is traditionally avoided. The south-west is considered the best location for the master bedroom.
Usually not. Most Vastu improvements are non-structural — the placement and direction of furniture and activities, decluttering, lighting, colours and simple remedies. Structural changes are recommended only when genuinely necessary.
