Manglik Dosha (Mangal Dosha): Meaning & Remedies

One of the most talked-about — and most misunderstood — factors in Indian marriage matching, explained honestly.

Manglik Dosha (also called Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha) is one of the first things families check before a marriage. It refers to the placement of Mars (Mangal) in certain houses of the birth chart, which is traditionally believed to create friction in married life. It is also one of the most over-stated and fear-inducing topics in popular astrology — so let us look at it calmly.

The truth is that Manglik Dosha is common, frequently cancelled, and rarely the barrier it is made out to be.

What causes Manglik Dosha?

A person is considered Manglik when Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart (some traditions count the 2nd house as well). These houses relate to the self, home, marriage, longevity and expenses — so Mars's fiery energy there is said to affect harmony, patience and temperament in marriage.

Mars is measured from the ascendant, and often also from the Moon and Venus. Because these placements are statistically common, a large share of people carry some form of Manglik Dosha.

When is Manglik Dosha cancelled?

This is the part popular astrology often leaves out. Manglik Dosha is cancelled or neutralised (Manglik Bhang) in many situations, for example:

  • When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is widely considered to cancel out.
  • When Mars is in its own sign, exalted, or aspected by benefics like Jupiter.
  • When Mars sits in certain signs (such as its own or friendly signs) in the relevant houses.
  • With age — the dosha is considered to weaken significantly after around 28 years.

A careful astrologer assesses the true strength of the dosha, not merely its presence.

What are the genuine remedies?

Where a real, uncancelled Manglik Dosha exists, traditional remedies include the Kumbh Vivah (a symbolic marriage), reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and worshipping Mars on Tuesdays, wearing a red coral only if the chart supports it, and specific charitable acts. Most importantly, an honest reading will tell you whether a remedy is even needed — often it is not.

A calmer perspective

Manglik Dosha should never be a source of panic or a reason to reject a good match on its own. It is one factor among many in compatibility, frequently cancelled, and manageable where real. If you have been told you are Manglik, the wise step is a proper reading of how strong it truly is — not fear.

Frequently asked questions

It is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart, traditionally thought to bring friction to married life. It is common and is cancelled in many chart combinations, so its presence alone is rarely a serious problem.
Yes — in fact, when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is widely considered to cancel out, and such matches are traditionally seen as well-suited. This is one of the most common ways the dosha is neutralised.
Many traditions hold that Manglik Dosha weakens considerably after about the age of 28, as Mars matures. Its true effect always depends on the specific chart, which is why an individual reading is more reliable than a blanket rule.
