The 12 Houses (Bhavas) of Vedic Astrology

If the planets are the actors in your chart and the signs are their costumes, the houses (bhavas) are the stages on which they perform. Each of the twelve houses governs a specific area of life, and the planets falling in each house — and the sign on its cusp — colour how that area unfolds.

Which houses are the most important?

Four houses are called the Kendras (angles) — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — and they form the backbone of the chart. Three are the Trikonas (trines) — the 1st, 5th and 9th — the houses of fortune and dharma. Planets that connect a Kendra with a Trikona create powerful Raj Yogas, classical combinations for success and status.

The 6th, 8th and 12th are the Dusthanas — the difficult houses of health, upheaval and loss — though even these carry gifts, such as resilience, research ability and spiritual growth.

How houses are read together

No house stands alone. To read the 7th house of marriage, for example, an astrologer weighs the sign on the 7th, any planets in it, the position and strength of its ruling planet, the planet Venus (the natural significator of marriage), and the Navamsa chart — then times it all through the dashas. The house is the question; the whole chart gives the answer.
