Your Birth Chart (Kundli) Explained

A birth chart — called a kundli, janm patri or horoscope — is a diagram of where the planets stood in the sky at the precise time and place of your birth. It is the single most important tool in Vedic astrology, the base from which every prediction and piece of guidance is drawn.

To cast an accurate kundli you need three things: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. Small errors in the time can shift the entire chart, which is why precision matters.

What is the ascendant (Lagna)?

The ascendant, or Lagna, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your moment of birth. It sets the entire framework of the chart — it becomes the first house and fixes where every other house and planet falls. Your Lagna shapes your temperament, body and the way you meet the world, and it is why birth time is so important.

How is a kundli drawn?

In North India the chart is drawn as a diamond-shaped diagram; in South India as a square grid. Both show the same thing: the twelve houses, the signs occupying them, and the planets placed within. The astrologer then reads the relationships — which planets sit together, which aspect each other, which are strong or weak — to understand the chart's story.

Beyond the main birth chart (the Rashi or D1), astrologers also use divisional charts (vargas) — such as the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and the Dashamsha (D10) for career — to zoom in on specific areas of life.

What does a kundli reveal?

Read well, a kundli describes your nature and strengths, the pattern of your relationships, your career and wealth tendencies, health inclinations, and — through the dasha system — the timing of major life events. It does not fix your fate; it shows the terrain, so you can travel it wisely.

Reading a chart is a craft, not a lookup

No single placement means one fixed thing. A planet's effect depends on its sign, house, strength, the houses it rules, the planets it sits with and aspects, and the dasha running at the time. This is why a genuine reading takes hours of preparation and years of training — and why an app's one-line verdict rarely tells the real story.
