Rudraksha Beads: Types, Benefits & How to Wear
The 'tears of Shiva' — sacred seeds worn for centuries for protection, focus and inner steadiness.
Rudraksha are the seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, worn as sacred beads in the Hindu tradition for thousands of years. The name means 'the eyes (aksha) of Rudra (Shiva)', and they are prized for their calming, protective and grounding qualities. Unlike gemstones, Rudraksha are gentle and are generally considered safe and beneficial for most people.
Their character is defined by their mukhi — the number of natural faces or clefts running down the bead — each linked to a deity, planet and specific benefit.
What do the different mukhi (faces) mean?
| Mukhi | Deity / Planet | Traditionally worn for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mukhi | Shiva / Sun | Focus, spiritual growth, clarity |
| 2 Mukhi | Ardhanareeshwar / Moon | Harmony, relationships, emotional balance |
| 3 Mukhi | Agni / Mars | Confidence, release of past, energy |
| 5 Mukhi | Kalagni Rudra / Jupiter | Peace, health, general wellbeing (most common) |
| 6 Mukhi | Kartikeya / Venus | Willpower, learning, relationships |
| 7 Mukhi | Mahalakshmi / Saturn | Prosperity, relief from Saturn troubles |
| 8 Mukhi | Ganesha / Rahu | Removing obstacles, success |
| 9 Mukhi | Durga / Ketu | Courage, protection, energy |
What are the benefits of wearing Rudraksha?
Wearers traditionally report a calmer, more focused mind, reduced stress and anxiety, better sleep, and a sense of protection and grounding. In Vedic practice, specific mukhis are also used to strengthen particular planets — for example, a 7 mukhi for Saturn-related difficulty, or a 5 mukhi for general health and peace. The 5 mukhi is the most common and is suitable for almost everyone.
How do you wear and care for a Rudraksha?
A Rudraksha should be genuine (many on the market are fake or carved), energised with a mantra such as 'Om Namah Shivaya' before first wearing, and kept clean. It is traditionally worn on a red or black thread or in gold/silver, ideally in contact with the skin. Remove it while sleeping if it is uncomfortable, keep it clean and oiled occasionally, and avoid lending it to others.
