Vedic astrology works with nine planets, the Navagraha: the two luminaries (Sun and Moon), five visible planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), and the two lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu). Each graha carries a distinct nature and governs particular parts of life. Where they sit, how strong they are, and when their dasha runs shapes your story.

Benefics, malefics and why it's never that simple

Traditionally, Jupiter, Venus, a strong Moon and well-placed Mercury are benefics (gentle, supportive), while Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu are malefics (demanding, testing). But this is only a starting point. A 'malefic' Saturn in a strong position can give tremendous success through discipline, while a 'benefic' Jupiter can bring trouble if it rules difficult houses. Context is everything.

What are Rahu and Ketu?

Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets but the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's — the lunar nodes. They always sit exactly opposite each other. Rahu represents worldly desire, ambition, foreign lands and sudden, dramatic rises (and illusions); Ketu represents detachment, spirituality, past-life karma and letting go. Their placement often marks the chart's deepest karmic themes.

Planetary strength and remedies

Before any remedy, an astrologer assesses each planet's strength — its sign, house, aspects and dignity. Only then is a remedy chosen: a gemstone to strengthen a weak-but-benefic planet, a mantra, a charity, or a fast tied to the planet's day. Wearing the wrong gemstone for your chart can do more harm than good, which is why remedies must always be personalised.
