Dashas: How Vedic Astrology Times Your Life

Most systems of astrology can describe your nature. Vedic astrology goes further: through the dasha system, it times events. A dasha is a planetary period — a stretch of years, months or days ruled by a particular planet, during which that planet's themes come to the foreground of your life.

The most widely used is the Vimshottari Dasha, a 120-year cycle divided among the nine planets. Knowing which dasha you are running is often the difference between a vague reading and a genuinely useful one.

How does the Vimshottari Dasha work?

The full Vimshottari cycle lasts 120 years and allots each planet a fixed span: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years. The planet whose Mahadasha (major period) you are born into is set by your Moon's Nakshatra at birth, and the cycle proceeds from there in a fixed order.

Each Mahadasha is subdivided into Antardashas (sub-periods) ruled by all nine planets in turn, and those into finer sub-sub-periods. So at any moment you are running a combination — for example, a Jupiter major period with a Saturn sub-period — and it is that combination, read against your chart, that shapes the timing of events.

Why is timing so valuable?

The same effort, in two different periods, does not give the same result. A favourable dasha can open doors that stay shut in a difficult one; a challenging period asks for patience rather than force. Knowing your dashas lets you time the big moves — a marriage, a launch, a career change, an investment — to the seasons that support them, and to wait out the ones that don't.

Dashas and transits together

Dashas describe your inner, unfolding timeline; transits (gochar) — the current real-time movement of the planets, such as Saturn's Sade Sati — describe the outer weather. A skilled astrologer reads the two together: an event tends to arrive when a dasha promises it and a transit triggers it. This layered timing is the real craft of prediction.
