Numerology: Your Mulank, Bhagyank and Name Number

Long before calculators, our tradition saw numbers as living forces. Ank Jyotish, or numerology, is the science that links each number from 1 to 9 with one of the nine planets (Navagraha). Your birth date and your name carry these numbers, and reading them offers a quick, revealing sketch of your nature, your strengths and your favourable days.

Numerology is not a replacement for a full birth chart — that remains the deepest tool — but it is a wonderful companion: easy to calculate and surprisingly accurate about temperament. Let us look at the three numbers that matter most — your Mulank (root number), your Bhagyank (destiny number), and your name number.

What is your Mulank (root number) and how do you calculate it?

Your Mulank, or root number, comes from the day of the month you were born. You simply add the digits of your birth date until you reach a single number from 1 to 9. The Mulank reflects your core personality — how you naturally think, act and come across to others — and is ruled by whichever planet owns that number.

For example, someone born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5, so their Mulank is 5 (ruled by Mercury). Someone born on the 9th has a Mulank of 9 (Mars); born on the 18th: 1 + 8 = 9, again Mulank 9. If your birth day is already a single digit, that is your Mulank as it stands.

What is your Bhagyank (destiny number)?

Your Bhagyank, or destiny number, is calculated from your complete date of birth — the day, the month and the full year — all added together and reduced to a single digit. Where the Mulank shows your nature, the Bhagyank points to your life path: the direction, the lessons and the rewards your destiny leans towards.

Take a birth date of 23 – 08 – 1990. Add every digit: 2 + 3 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5. The Bhagyank is 5. When the Mulank and Bhagyank are friendly numbers, life tends to flow more smoothly; when they clash, a person often feels a pull between who they are and where life is taking them — something a reading can help harmonise.

What is a name number and how is it calculated?

Your name number comes from the letters of the name you actually use. In the widely used Chaldean system each letter carries a value, and the total is reduced to a single digit. This number colours how the world receives you — your reputation, your public 'brand', the vibration your name carries.

Add the value of each letter in your name, keep reducing to a single digit, and you have your name number. (In the Chaldean system the number 9 is kept aside as sacred and is not assigned to any letter.) Because your name is something you can actually change — unlike your birth date — the name number is the doorway to name correction, which we come to below.

What is name correction and does it really work?

Name correction is the practice of adjusting the spelling of your name — adding or dropping a letter, or changing an initial — so that its name number becomes friendly with your Mulank and Bhagyank. You see it everywhere: a 'Rajiv' who becomes 'Rajeev', or a business that tweaks its spelling before a relaunch. The idea is to bring the vibration of your name into harmony with the numbers you were born with.

Does it work? Honestly, name correction is a supportive remedy, not a miracle. It can bring a subtle sense of ease and better reception, especially for a business identity — but it cannot rewrite your karma or replace effort and good decisions. It should always be done thoughtfully, ideally alongside a look at your full chart, so the change actually suits you.
