Shravana Nakshatra

The listening star — learning through the ear, wisdom through attention, connection through the word.

2 min readLord: MoonDeity: Vishnu, the preserverBy Dr. Nidhi Sharma

Shravana means 'the hearing'. The Moon rules and Vishnu presides — his three strides measured the universe, and this star measures it by listening. It is the nakshatra of the student, the counsellor, the keeper and carrier of knowledge.

Natives learn everything by ear and heart: languages, scriptures, other people's true meaning beneath their words. They connect worlds the way a message connects two minds.

Gifts of Shravana

  • Deep listening — people feel truly heard
  • Learning and memory; tradition lives in them
  • The connector's gift: right word, right ear, right time

Watch-outs for Shravana

  • Hearing everyone's story except their own
  • Gossip — the shadow of the gifted ear
  • Endless learning as a way to postpone living

As with every nakshatra, these are tendencies to befriend, not faults to fear — the rest of the chart softens or sharpens each one.

Padas and naming syllables

Shravana spans four padas (quarters), whose navamsa signs run Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer — each giving the nakshatra's nature a different flavour. Earlier padas gather knowledge; later padas teach and transmit it.

By the naming tradition, a child born under Shravana is given a name beginning with Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho according to the pada — a custom that ties the name to the Moon's exact position at birth.

How to know if this is your nakshatra

Your Janma Nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at your birth — it cannot be told from the date alone.
